Black and white, chequered bands and rosettes: no colour, no flowers. This is the line that works where the rest of Tuscan ceramics would jar — in a modern house with little colour on the walls.
Black is the most unforgiving pigment to use: it does not excuse a crooked line, because there is no dense pattern around it to hide one. The chequerwork is painted square by square, by hand, and looking closely you can see that no square is identical to its neighbour.
