The red is laid on solid, with no painted decoration over it: what you see in relief is modelled in the clay itself, leaf by leaf, before the first firing. The glaze then gathers in the hollows and darkens them, and that is what gives the volume.
The column shape on a wide base stands up even on a floor that is not perfectly level, which in an old house is not a small thing.
