Table jugs and carafes for water or wine. The spout is the only part judged by using it rather than looking at it: a handsome jug that drips stays on the shelf.
The decoration follows the belly of the piece and stops at the handle, which is left plain. That is a matter of legibility: a pattern cut in half by a handle reads badly.
